Mitigating the effects of climate change: Helping agrarian communities.

The Lancet describes climate change as the biggest global-health threat of the 21st century and, unfortunately, the most deprived communities are also the most vulnerable. West Bengal is a largely agricultural community which has been subject to a series of climate disasters, such as Cyclone Aila in 2009, as well as the repercussions of urban pollution contaminating waterways and fields. Farming communities have been unable to adapt to the new changes and they have maintained the same practices for thousands of years.
CINI is working in collaboration with Navdanya, a charity which fights for the rights of indigenous farmers, to help communities in West Bengal mitigate the effects of climate change. The project will provide infrastructure, such as tube wells and soil testing equipment, as well as training farmers in new methods and practices to ensure they can maintain their livelihoods. This project is the first of its kind, and CINI is excited to be working with Navdanya on a new and innovative approach to tackling one of the greatest threats of the 21st century.
